The Diet of King Henry VIII

Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was King of England, the Tudor monarch. When he was 30, he was a healthy and strong 6’1 tall man.

In his late 40s King Henry was in very poor health. He was obese and suffered from high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, chronic leg ulcers, poor eyesight, bad circulation, constipation problems.

Henry VIII ate up to thirteen dishes a day! The king’s diet consisted mainly of meat dishes which included pork, lamb, chicken, beef, rabbit and a different variety of birds such as peacocks and swans. King Henry VIII and other Tudors got round this by drinking a lot of ale, the total being some seventy pints a week. They would have also drunk a great amount of red wine sweetened with sugar.

Henry VIII ate a lot of bread. He consumed about five thousand calories a day without any physical activity. Also, The Tudors did not drink fresh water because it was not safe to drink.

Henry VIII also did not like the vegetables and considered them to be food for peasants. However, he did like the strawberries.

King Henry VIII consumed too much salt, 20 g a day, which is 1.5 Lb a month.
